The Super Bowl XLVII champion New England Patriots won a thrilling and historic rematch with the Indianapolis Colts.
They’ll face off against the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Sunday night.
Here are five things to know about the Patriots’ stunning upset win over the Colts.1.
They were so close to winning in 2016.
The Patriots had a 2-0 record heading into Super Bowl LI and were poised to take home the Lombardi Trophy as the best team in football.
But that didn’t happen.
The Patriots finished the regular season tied with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the worst record in the NFL and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2007.
New England finished 4-12-1 and finished the season ranked 22nd in the league in points allowed per game (23.3) and 25th in points scored per game (+0.4).
The team also allowed the most points in the playoffs, which was tied for the sixth-most.
In addition to the Patriots losing to the Indianapolis team in the first round of the playoffs in 2018, they lost to the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game, lost to Baltimore in the Super Bowl and lost to Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game.
The New England defense, led by Bill Belichick, didn’t exactly turn the tide in the regular-season finale.
The defense allowed the Patriots to score touchdowns on only six of their 30 drives and had seven turnovers.
The most turnovers came on the first drive of the game.
The Colts offense scored the final touchdown on a 2nd-and-goal from the 4th quarter, but it was the Patriots offense’s first scoring drive since they led 21-0 in the fourth quarter.
The team’s quarterback, Tom Brady, had his best game as a pro with his 2,500-yard passing season in the opener.
But Brady was limited to one touchdown pass and zero touchdown passes.
The most significant blow came from the Colts defense.
They allowed an average of 14.1 points per game during the regular seasons, including the playoffs.
New England’s opponents averaged 17.5 points per contest.
The team had the worst defense in the postseason (31.5 ppg).
New England was also without key players in key spots, including running back LeGarrette Blount, who was out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon.
The Pats lost starting defensive tackle Marcus Cannon, who led the team with 7.5 sacks and had 16.5 tackles for loss.
Blount is a free agent after this season, and he’s likely to sign with another team.
The Titans are among the teams expected to pursue him.2.
The teams didn’t have a chance to win the Super Bowl before the game, so they won it on their own.
The Super Bowl was originally scheduled for Jan. 7, 2020, but the Patriots won it at home on their way to a record-setting season.
The Super Bamps won the Super Dome championship in 2009 and the Super Cotton Bowl in 2012.
In both of those games, the Patriots scored first in the third quarter.
It’s the only time in Super Bowl history that two teams finished with no first downs on first down.
The next play is always the last play of the first quarter.
New York won the championship.3.
It wasn’t the first matchup between the two teams.
The Saints won the AFC East title in 2013 and won the NFC East title four years later.
But they won the regular series in both cases.
The 2014 and 2015 Super Bowls were played in New Orleans and were decided by one possession.
The 2014 NFC title game was played in Miami, and the 2015 AFC championship game was in New York.
In those games the Patriots lost by seven points to the New England Colts.
